What is your hometown like? Purvis is a small town outside of Hattiesburg, MS. The people there are some of the most kind-hearted, loving, and craziest people I have ever met
What were you like when you were a child? As a child, I always enjoyed going to school and church. I was serious but I also enjoyed playing dress up and having parties. I liked making good grades and was always willing to learn. I would always light up and beam at every compliment! I loved to please my teachers and parents. I would say I am still the same way today
Who is the most influential person in your life? My dad is a person who truly cares about people and unwillingly helps those who are in need. His selfless acts are what makes him such a positive, influential role model
What is the one thing about you that people you meet may not immediately realize? One thing about me that people may not immediately realize is that I am a very cheap person. Money is crucial, and life is long. So spend both wisely
Describe one defining moment in your own life, other than winning your local title: When I was in the 11th grade, my friends Mallory, Taylor, and I formed a singing trio called “The Carraways.” We auditioned, performed, and won the group portion of the Hattiesburg X-Factor. Winning this gave us the opportunity to travel to North Carolina and audition for the show. This was a great experience that I will never forget
What is one important thing you have learned from being in the Miss America Program? I have learned that “Good things come to those who wait.” Last year, I completed in two preliminaries and won alternates in both. At that time, I was brand new to the “pageant world.” Since last year, I have been able to better prepare myself and learn more than I knew before. This experience has ultimately been worth the wait
If you are crowned Miss Mississippi, what do you want to accomplish during your Year of Service? If I am crowned Miss Mississippi, I want to travel and express my platform. I want Mississippi to see how much the Miss Mississippi organization cares about the financial well-being of tomorrow’s adults. From teaching high-schoolers to Rotary Club meetings, we can help prevent financial problems by someday making Personal Finance a core class in not only high school, but college as well
What is your secret wish or dream? My secret dream is to be “Glinda” from the Broadway Musical “Wicked” and sing with Idina Menzel
I’m motivated by: Music is my motivation. Specifically, the Kari Jobe station on my Pandora app. Her music is always beautiful and captivating
Is there a personal connection that made you pick your personal platform? Since being in college, I have noticed many of my friends who are having financial problems. Whether with taking out loans, food, or even money for supplies. My parents are both committed to full-time ministry, and have taught me how to handle my finances. I am lucky to have made it through two years of college and still have yet take out any loans. I feel that if we require some sort of financial class, current students would have better knowledge of personal finances and could possibly prevent future debt problems that our country faces today
What do you think has been the most significant event in your lifetime? A few years ago I started the program “Piano for Kids.” I taught free piano lessons at my church and at the Salvation Army: Boys and Girls Club. The kids received multiple lessons. At the completion of their book, the kids each got a certificate. When the children received these certificates, their faces lit up with joy! They were holding an award that showed, for some of them, their greatest accomplishment. Some of them were so proud that they ran right to their friends to show them the amazing thing they had done
The one thing I can’t live without: Music
My best friend would describe me as: kind, compassionate, smart, and delightful
Something interesting about my family: One Thanksgiving, my family and I went to the Salvation Army. My mom, dad, brother, and I sang while I played the keyboard for the people eating their meal. I will never forget this day. Our encouragement through song was entertaining, but seeing their faces glow and their smiles was truly priceless
Funniest or most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to me: There are so many to choose from! But one that is most recent was when I played the offertory at church. I have played this song hundreds of times, but for some reason, my mind went to completely blank halfway through the song! So I started the song over again. When I got to the earlier spot where I forgot, I couldn’t remember again. So this time I just skipped to the last page. I was just ready to get off of that piano bench
One thing I’d like to try that is out of character for me: I would like to try being open to new things. I order the same thing at every restaurant, I go to the same place to study, and I spend time with the same people. I have always had a big problem with change, but I think that branching out could be a good thing for me
Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and tell us their names: Yes! I have a three month old Chihuahua named Chico and a 13 year old lab/chow mix name Winston
