Because of this awareness, the program gained 101 more children this past summer.

Sport: I guess you could say I really wasn’t born with much of a choice on this one. I had to love football. My dad played football at Mississippi State, and I have grown up immersed in it. I love nothing more than a fall football game tailgate and the roar at Davis Wade Stadium as our Bulldogs take the field.

What is your hometown like? My hometown of Pontotoc is a small, quaint town. If you ever mention it, most people will ask you where it is, but Pontotoc has shaped and supported me throughout my whole life. The people of Pontotoc truly believe in the saying “It takes a village to raise a child” and I am grateful that Pontotoc raised me.
What were you like when you were a child? I was a quiet child who was often described as the teacher’s pet, because I loved learning and was terrified of breaking the rules. I thought I was really cool because my birthday fell in October and my birthday parties were always really fun because we had several haunted corn mazes from which to choose.
Who is the most influential person in your life? My mom is the most influential person in my life. She has taught me the value of hard work and instilled in me a love for the Lord. She is my number one fan who is at every event and there to support me every step of the way.
What is the one thing about you that people you meet may not immediately realize? I consider myself a book worm. I enjoy reading and learning about new things. You can often times find me watching the Discovery or History channel. .
Describe one defining moment in your own life, other than winning your local title: The most defining moment in my life is when I was saved. As an eight year old at vacation bible school, I made the most important decision that any person can make. Since that day, I have tried to live a life of high moral standards and service to the Lord.
What is one important thing you have learned from being in the Miss America Program? When many people look at the Miss America crown, they do not immediately think about one of the most important aspects of it- service. This has been the biggest realization for me as a titleholder. Not only do I get to compete in the Miss Mississippi pageant, but also with my crown, I have a foundation to serve my state and make it a better place for everyone.
If you are crowned Miss Mississippi, what do you want to accomplish during your Year of Service? As Miss Mississippi, I want to promote my platform Game On For Literacy through cooperation of schools, communities, and individuals to make reading accessible and a more prominent subject area in schools. Reading is fundamental for all areas of learning, and Mississippi ranks at the bottom in literacy skills. Throughout the year, I want to serve as a role model who shows the people in the state of Mississippi that one person can truly make a difference in the lives of others.
What is your secret wish or dream? I wish I could be an actress! It would be so neat to pretend to be someone else for a while.
I’m motivated by: A strong desire to succeed. From a very young age, my parents instilled in me the value of hard work and that if something is worth having, it is worth the effort.
Is there a personal connection that made you pick your personal platform? Yes, I have always enjoyed reading; therefore, I read to my two younger brothers with the hope that they too would share my love of reading. When I looked further into reading, I realized what a huge problem the lack of literacy skills is in America and especially in Mississippi. My platform, Game On ForLIteracy, is geared toward encouraging young children to develop strong reading fundamentals for a better Mississippi.
What do you think has been the most significant event in your lifetime? One defining moment in my life was the birth of my two brothers. I had always wanted siblings and I got to watch the struggle that my parents went through to have another child. Because of this experience, I have an understanding of both the joys and sorrows a family can experience, and I want to be an OB/GYN.
The one thing I can’t live without: My car. I love the convenience of jumping in my car and going where I need to be.
My best friend would describe me as: Someone who is great at balancing work and play. I have many commitments with school, clubs, and community service, but I find ways to spend time with my friends and family. She has often times mentioned that she does not know how I do it all, but I would not want it any other way.
Something interesting about my family: I come from a line of football players. My grandfather played football for the Memphis Tigers in the 1950’s and even roller-skated with Elvis a few times. My dad played football for Mississippi State in the late 1980’s. I do not think I will be continuing this tradition any time soon.
Funniest or most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to me: One of the years I was selected to be on homecoming court they gave us only a week notice to get a dress. I found one that I loved and rushed it to a seamstress for alterations. We picked the dress up only a few hours before I had to wear it, and it was way too short. We called everyone we knew looking for dressy flats, but because of the lack of time, I had to walk across the field barefoot and take very small steps.
One thing I’d like to try that is out of character for me: I have never considered myself much of an outdoorsman, but I would love to try hiking.
Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and tell us their names: I have a maltipoo named Griffin.
