Describe one defining moment in your own life, other than winning your local title: A defining moment in my life would definitely be being accepted to the University of Mississippi, receiving numerous scholarships, and studying Biochemistry there for the past five semesters. I really value the opportunity to gain a higher education because that is something that can never be taken away from me.
What is one important thing you have learned from being in the Miss America Program? One thing that this organization has taught me it to always be myself and get out of my comfort zone. I became involved when I was just 15 years old as an Outstanding Teen, and by pushing myself to get out of my comfort zone and being my true self I made tons of friends that I still stay in contact with today.
If you are crowned Miss Mississippi, what do you want to accomplish during your Year of Service? During my year of service, I would like to expand my Don’t Wait, Educate program and work with ambassadors to help further spread this message. Bullying Prevention is something that should be spoken about in every school across America. I feel that the more children that my program can reach, the greater the chance that those children won’t have to experience bullying without prior knowledge of how to handle it.
What is your secret wish or dream? My secret wish is to be able to sing like Whitney Houston.
I’m motivated by: I am most motivated by being overly involved. I feel that I work best under pressure with knowing that I have no time to be lazy.
Is there a personal connection that made you pick your personal platform? As a child and pre-teen, I was bullied. It was about my clothes and being “weird” when I was young, but as I got older, it escalated and became about the way I looked and my personality. Because of these experiences, my self-esteem was knocked down. If I could reach out to just one child and teach them how to handle bullies, I would feel that my program and I had succeeded.
What do you think has been the most significant event in your lifetime? The evolution of the internet. Throughout my lifetime, the internet has become an everyday, all day tool. It can be accessed almost everywhere and on most devices. It’s even on our watches now!
The one thing I can’t live without: I know that I could not make it without my hot rollers!
My best friend would describe me as: My best friend and I have actually been best friends since we were two, so I truly think she knows me better than anyone. She would describe me as ambitious, opinionated, and up for anything.
Something interesting about my family: I was named after my father and grandfather. If I would have been a boy, I would have been Charles Ray Nix III. When they found out that I was going to be girl instead, they did some tweaking to get Charley from Charles!
Funniest or most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to me: I was running through the Grove mid-afternoon to turn in a paper before a deadline, and I tripped and fell in front of everyone. I did not have much time to care who saw, so I shook off the dirt and kept going! I did make my deadline though!
One thing I’d like to try that is out of character for me: Skydiving because I am terrified of heights.
Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and tell us their names: Yes. I have a tiny teddy Pomeranian named Darcie. She thinks she is a human, and we are just alike!
